EDTC 809 Assessment & Evaluation
This course is an introduction to a systematic inquiry using assessment methods to understand, evaluate and solve user and organizational needs. Integration of research methods with real-world challenges of conducting and analyzing research in educational and corporate settings.
Professor: Dr. Christopher Carnahan
Fall 2019
The first project was to conduct a field observation and learned to jot notes in a public place. I had a coding technique practice by analyzing and interpreting the transcribed notes.
The second project was to gain experience in designing the methods and assessments involved in creating a qualitative research study. The topic was on Instagram and STEM engagement. I presented a problem, need, qualitative research questions, literature review, described the methodology, defined the population and sample, and outlined procedures and timeline proposal. The social learning theory covered in the paper stated that cognitive learning took place through social interactions and experiences (Bandura, 1977). The social interactions and experiences captured through Instagram.
The assignment involved creating a research proposal for the next project. The proposal included a description of the study, complete data collection, research questions, need for the study, research design, and the interview questions centered on the research questions. The proposal was of a phenomenological study: Slack engagement between professor and student relationships and communication.
The assignment was to complete a research project with expanded development to create the instrument for the study, gained familiarity with Qualtrics, and filled out an IRB application. I gained an understanding of the process of researching with human subjects and the required ethics and compliance through the CITI training.
